Venice – Tobias and the Angel is a painting by Antonio Guardi and is the biblical tale of Tobias and the Angel. Here Tobias is about to marry Sarah, his sweetheart. Sarah has been invaded by demons. In the cauldron, the liver and heart of a fish caught by Tobias are being boiled up to be used to rid Sarah of the demons… The subject of Tobias and the Angel (Raphael) was very popular from the 15th century as a biblical tale with a happy ending. Titian, Verrocchio, Lippi and many other artists painted versions of this story. Tobias is usually shown carrying the fish he has caught. The Angel Raphael is his guide and helper on the journey. Guardi’s painting decorates the front of the organ loft in the Church of San Angelo, Raffaele, Venice.
