Venice – Guardi and the story of Tobias and the Angel

Venice – Tobias and the Angel is a painting by Antonio Guardi and is the biblical tale of Tobias and the Angel. Their story is enchanting and easy to remember – it was a very popular happy-ending tale in the days when life was tough and brutal. Here Tobias is about to marry Sarah, his sweetheart. Sarah has been invaded by demons and Tobias tried to get rid Sarah of the demons…

The subject of Tobias and the Angel (Raphael) was very popular from the 15th century as a biblical tale. The story is an ancient one and pre-dates Christianity by several hundred years. Titian, Verrocchio, Lippi, and many other artists painted versions of this story. Tobias usually appears carrying the fish he has caught. The Angel Raphael is his guide and helper on the journey. Guardi’s painting decorates the front of the organ loft in the Church of San Angelo, Raffaele, Venice.
