Ischia, Sorrento and Amalfi – Italy

Ischia, Sorrento and Amalfi – Italy

When the sun starts to shine then the seaside is on everybody’s mind. In Italy that’s got to mean Amalfi, Sorrento and Ischia.

Here at Grand Tourist we are no exception, as soon as the Christmas decorations are put away we are thinking about summer holidays, especially in Italy. Fly into Naples, enjoy chaos, pizza and exceptional art. Then head around the Bay of Naples to Herculaneum and Pompeii for a little bit of archaeology and the brooding presence of Vesuvius. Think all things volcanic; lava flows, exceptional excavations and amazing history. Take a ferry across the Bay of Naples to Ischia, a lush, tropical paradise of gardens and hot volcanic springs. Take a boat to Capri and then to Sorrento, where ‘la dolce vita’ began in the 1950s. Then cross the Monti Lattari hills bound for Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. First take a moment to appreciate the rugged rock faces of the mountains, here the exceptionally fertile soils of Campagna allow the production of the finest tomatoes in Italy. The pomodorini di Monte Lattari are the sweetest in all of the peninsula – so they say. Down at the coast there’s Amalfi, Positano and a hundred beach clubs and waterfront restaurants to tempt you. For walkers there are some wonderful footpaths including the poetically named ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ foothpath of the gods!
