A WEEK IN ISTANBUL WITH AN EXCURSION TO TROY & GALLIPOLI Anytime

The city of Istanbul sits at the gateway between Europe and Asia. It is an extraordinary city blending eastern and western culture to create a dynamic and vibrant city. The body of water known as the Bosphorus separates the Asian and European sides of the city. The Bosphorus waterway also links the Mediterranean Sea with the Black Sea and ths has made it a vital trading route for generations. The Romans, Crusaders, Venetians and Ottomans have all left their mark on Constantinople and later Istanbul.

On arrival at Istanbul Airport your driver and car will be waiting to transfer you to your centrally located first class boutique hotel. You may wish to sample a nearby hammam this afternoon (typical Turkish steam bath). This evening dinner is served in the roof top restaurant of the hotel, with magnificent views of the Bosphorus.

Day 2: Istanbul

After a buffet breakfast in the hotel your guide will arrive to take you on a tour of historic Istanbul. You will discover the principal Byzantine and Ottoman monuments, including the church of St Sophia, The Hippodrome, Roman Basilica Cistern and the amazing Topkapi Palace. Your guide will suggest a selection of nice restaurants for lunch.

Day 3: Istanbul

After a leisurely start this morning why not try your skills and haggle with the carpet vendors and spice seller in the Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Bazaar. This is a unique experience - keep your cool and get stuck in! You may want to include the Galata Tower today - there has been a tower on this site since the 6th century. The view from the top is amazing and fortunately there is a lift! Located in the Karakoy part of the city, this area is also wonderful for smart restaurants and cocktail bars.

Day 4: Istanbul

Today we suggest a visit to the Dolmabache Palace, the finest 19th century palace in Istanbul, built by the Sultan in the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire. It was the home of Turkey's first President Ataturk until his death in 1938.

Day 5: Istanbul - Gallipoli - Troy - Canakkale

After an early breakfast, you will set off along the coast to the 'Asian side' of Turkey and on to Gallipoli. Here you will visit the Anzac Cove and the Lone Pine Cemetery - a moving site that was the scene of the fierce fighting in World War I. Today it is a fascinating and enormously impressive place to visit. After taking a short ferry ride accross the water you will then visit the legendary Troy and the ruins of nine cities built on top of each other over the centuries. You can also see an enormous reconstruction of the famous Wooden House.

Day 6: Canakkale - Istanbul

You have the morning at leisure. Perhaps you will decide to go for a nice walk in this fascinating part of the country. This afternoon your driver will take you to the port where you will travel by ferry back to Istanbul. Tonight you will stay in the luxury of a Bosphorus Palace hotel. A dinner at a fish restaurant is included this evening with our compliments.

Day 7: Istanbul

A trip to the nearby Modern Art Gallery is a great idea for the day. The Gallery is located on the waterfront and has an interesting collection (even for the non-art lover). It also has a delightful terrace over-looking the Bosphorus. Sadly it is  the end of your holiday in Istanbul - an amazing place to visit and an incredible place to get to know.
