AMALFI COAST, ITALY HEAVEN anytime

A stretch of picturesque coastline wedged between the blue of the sky and sea, a string of spectacular little towns and ancient fishing villages cling to the coast, it can only be the unforgettable Amalfi Coast.

The Amalfi Coast is a beautiful and renowned stretch of mountainous coastline south of Naples, Campania. The southern end of Naples streches out in a steep and rocky peninsula that reaches towards the Isle of Capri. Sorrento, another major tourist destination, looks back towards Naples from the north coast of the peninsula. The southern side of the peninsula is dotted with picturesque villages and towns clinging to the rugged cliffs.

For decades, these fishing villages, stacked precariously above the sea have been one of Italy's major tourist attractions. Nowadays, the area's principal industry is tourism and a staggering number of hotels have been squeezed into the restricted spaces of the small towns. Well accustomed to catering for affluent foreign tourists, the area offers a generous selection of restaurants, bars and boutiques. The views are undeniably breathtaking and away from the main road and tourist hot-spots you can still discover the peace that charmed earlier visitors.

On arrival into Naples, the closest airport, a driver will collect you and take you to your desitnation whether it be a stylish boutique hotel or a comfortable and homely bed and breakfast, the choice is yours!

Once arrived at your destination, you will see why the area is so popular; full of history, style and culture. Ravello is a renowned town on the Amali Coast. Situated on a rocky promontory at 350 metres above sea level, the town is a real jewel of art and culture, where a strong sense of hospitality lives in harmony with an atomsphere of rare tranquillity.

An alternative town to visit would be Positano. According to legend, Positano was founded by the God Neptune when he fell in love with nymph Pasitea. It is one of the most well known holiday destinations in the world. The town is built in a charming fashion on terraces and steep rocks of the Monte Comune and a small well protected bay. Positano has earned its worldwide reputation not only because of the beauty of its surroundings but also because of the shops that produce made to measure clothes in the distinctive "Positano style".

Other areas to explore whilst in the coastal region would be Priano or Amalfi Town. Amalfi Town lies on the highergrounds in the valley and features a series of white houses, most with barrel vault ceilings and built on terraces within a picturesque web of alleys and stairways. The main monument and symbol of the city is the Cathedral of St. Andrews, preceded by an imposing staircase. There are also a number of museums which could be visited including a paper museum, town hall and farming museum.

The great thing about the Amalif Coast is that you can explore the area at your own pace. Grand Tourist would be delighted to arrange a hire car for the duration of your stay. What better way to explore the coast then at the wheel of a Mini Convertible!
